What is Dementia?
Dementia encompasses a group of diseases or/and symptoms that effect intellectual and social capacities due to damaged brain cells.
Often these symptoms get progressively worse with time until daily activities are impaired.
To be diagnosed with dementia, one must have impaired memory and at least one other affected cognitive domain such as language, personality or executive function.
Signs and Symptoms
Dementia is characterized by numerous symptoms. The early stages are often portrayed as forgetfulness. However, as dementia progresses, more symptoms present themselves.
Possible signs and symptoms include:
-
Difficulty finding correct verbiage
-
Forgetting recent events and/or conversations
-
Getting lost in familiar places or routes
-
Personality changes
Once a person is diagnosed with a type of Dementia, especially in rural areas, the amount of resources available decrease drastically. Physicians tend to refer people to Nursing Homes. Nursing homes do have their purpose, however, it does not have to be the only answer.
